Comparing the Top-Selling, Comfortable, and Reliable Compact Crossovers
Honda and Toyota models are often compared thanks to the automakers’ reliability, vehicle offerings, and price point. Two models with similar sizes and features are the Honda CR-V and RAV4. In 2023, Honda redesigned the CR-V, and the 2024 model continues the new design and standard features. Toyota has not shared details about the 2024 RAV-4, so we can only evaluate the 2023 Toyota RAV4. Let’s take a close look at the two compact crossover SUVs to see which is the best choice.
What’s Under the Hood of the Fuel-Efficient CR-V and RAV4
The 2024 Honda CR-V is powered by a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine. It delivers 190 horsepower and 179 lb-ft of torque. The entry-level LX trim comes standard with front-wheel drive and a continuously variable automatic transmission. The CR-V is available with a mild-hybrid powertrain and all-wheel drive. The EPA-estimated fuel rating on the front-wheel-drive CR-V is 28/34 MPG.
Toyota puts a 2.5-liter four-cylinder in the RAV4. This engine has an eight-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive, and the configuration delivers 203 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. The engine has an EPA-estimated fuel rating of 27/35 MPG. Toyota also offers the RAV4 with available all-wheel drive and with a mild-hybrid powertrain. A plug-in hybrid model called RAV4 Prime is also available.
Filled With Safety Technology for Drivers, Passengers, and Pedestrians
Both models have full suites of standard driver-assistance features. The Honda Sensing technology in the Honda CR-V includes Forward Collision Warning, Forward Automatic Emergency Braking, Lane-Departure Warning, Lane-Keep Assist, Traffic-Sign Recognition, Adaptive Cruise Control, Rear-Seat Alert, Automatic High-Beam Headlights, and a Rearview Camera.
Toyota includes the Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 package in all RAV4 models. This suite includes Forward Collision Warning, Forward Automatic Emergency Braking, Lane-Departure Warning, Lane-Keep Assist, Traffic-Sign Recognition, Adaptive Cruise Control, Pedestrian Detection, Automatic High-Beam Headlights, and a Rearview Camera.
Infotainment Systems and Convenience Features
Honda includes a 7.0-inch digital gauge cluster and a 7.0-inch touchscreen in the entry-level CR-V. Entertainment features include Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, one USB port, and four speakers.
The RAV4 has a 7.0-inch digital gauge cluster and an 8.0-inch infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, three USB ports, SiriusXM Satellite Radio, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and six speakers.
The CR-V EX-L trim has a larger 9.0-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless device charging, HD Radio, SiriusXM Satellite Radio, and eight speakers.
Evaluating the 2024 Honda CR-V vs Toyota RAV4 Styling
Honda offers the CR-V and CR-V Hybrid in a handful of trims. The entry-level LX is followed by the EX and EX-L. The Hybrid trims include the Sport, Sport-L, and Sport Touring. The top trims are outfitted with leather upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and additional infotainment features.
On the flip side, Toyota offers more trims for the RAV4, RAV4 Hybrid, and RAV4 Prime. The gas-powered RAV4 comes in the entry-level LE trim, along with XLE, XLE Premium, Adventure, TRD Off-Road, and Limited. While many of these are equipped like the CR-V, the RAV4 TRD Off-Road turns the RAV4 into a mild off-road model with skid plates, 18-inch wheels, and an off-road-tuned suspension.
The RAV4 Hybrid is available in seven trims, while the RAV4 Prime is available in two trims. All RAV4 and CR-V models have four doors, a liftgate, and seating for five. The RAV4 has 37.6 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats upright and 69.8 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. The redesigned CR-V has 39.3 cubic feet of cargo space with the seats upright and 76.5 cubic feet with them lowered.
Why the Honda CR-V Beats the Competition at Westshore Honda in Tampa, FL
The 2024 CR-V and 2023 RAV4 have several similarities, and both models have various strengths. But, the redesigned CR-V is larger with more passenger and cargo space. It also has a more luxurious interior than the RAV4. When driving around Clearwater and Ybor City, drivers appreciate the quieter, turbocharged Honda engine compared to the noisy 2.5-liter four-cylinder in the RAV4.
